Facebook Buying WhatsApp For $19B, Will Keep The Messaging Service Independent

The deal is being cut for $12 billion in Facebook shares, $4 billion in cash and an additional $3 billion in RSUs for employee retention.<br />A termination fee is attached to the deal that would cost Facebook $1 billion in cash and $1 billion in shares if the deal fails to pass regulatory muster.<br />Facebook has <a href="http://newsroom.fb.com/News/805/Facebook-to-Acquire-WhatsApp" target="_blank">posted on its blog</a>, detailing the reasoning behind the acquisition, as well. The post notes that WhatsApp will continue to operate independently and retain its brand. In addition, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook’s board.<br />Facebook notes that WhatsApp has over 450 million MAUs, with 70 percent of those active each day. In a staggering comparison, Facebook also notes that the messaging volume of WhatsApp approaches the SMS volume of the entire global telecom industry — and that it’s adding 1 million users a day.<br />“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO in a statement.<br /><a name="more"></a><br />“WhatsApp had every option in the world,” Zuckerberg <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck/posts/10101272463589561" target="_blank">continued in a post</a> to his Facebook page, “so I’m thrilled that they chose to work with us. I’m looking forward to what Facebook and WhatsApp can do together, and to developing great new mobile services that give people even more options for connecting. I’ve also known Jan for a long time, and I know that we both share the vision of making the world more open and connected. There would have been no partnership between our two companies if we had to compromise on the core principles that will always define our company, our vision and our product.</blockquote>The note about no advertising is interesting, as that’s obviously Facebook’s primary method of monetization on its main platform — and now Instagram. WhatsApp will also keep its subscription fees, which amount to $1 per user after the first year of use.<br />WhatsApp investor Sequoia has <a href="http://sequoiacapital.tumblr.com/post/77211282835/four-numbers-that-explain-why-facebook-acquired" target="_blank">also posted some information</a> about the acquisition, specifically its very large valuation. The company notes that it only has 32 engineers — making the ratio 1 engineer to every 14 million users. Change the 20 Second Time Delay
By default the widget pops up 20 seconds after the page finishes loading.  Search for the code below and change the number 20000 to a greater or lesser number.

1 second = 1000.  10 seconds = 10000. 60 seconds = 60000.

Popup every time the page loads 
By default, the like box widget only shows up the first time the user visits your page.  If you would like the facebook box to popup every time the page loads, then remove this line of code:

What is HTTPS and Why Should I Care?

Knowing what it means is important, as it has serious implications banking online, shopping, and avoiding phishing.<br />When you connect to most websites, your web browser uses the standard HTTP protocol. HTTPS is the secure, encrypted counterpart to HTTP — it literally stands for “HTTP Secure,” which is “Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure.”<br /><h3>The Problem With HTTP<a name="more"></a></h3>When you connect to a website with HTTP, your browser looks up the IP address that corresponds to the website, connects to that IP address, and assumes it’s connected to the correct web server. Data is sent over the connection in clear text, so an eavesdropper on a Wi-Fi network, your Internet service provider, or state intelligent agencies like the NSA can see the web pages you’re visiting and the data you’re transferring back and forth. An eavesdropper could see any passwords, credit cards, or other data if it were sent over HTTP. There are big problems with this. For one thing, there’s no way to authenticate that you’re connected to the correct website. Maybe you think you accessed your bank’s website, but you’re on a compromised network and you were redirected to an impostor website. You want passwords and credit card numbers to be encrypted and secured so no one can eavesdrop on them and steal your personal data. There’s also the risk of people eavesdropping on the websites you visit and searches you make.<br />In short, HTTP has problems because HTTP connections are never encrypted. HTTPS adds <a href="http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/33949/htg-explains-what-is-encryption-and-how-does-it-work/">encryption</a> in an attempt to fix these problems.<br /><br /><img alt="identify-https-website-in-chrome" border="0" height="227" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/identify-https-website-in-chrome.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="identify-https-website-in-chrome" width="400" /><br /><h3>How HTTPS Solves This Problem</h3>HTTPS isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly much more secure than HTTP. When you connect to an HTTPS secured server — secure sites like your bank’s will automatically redirect you to HTTPS when you attempt to log in — your web browser checks the website’s security certificate and verifies it was issued by a legitimate certificate authority. This helps you ensure that, if you see “https://bank.com” in your web browser’s address bar, you’re actually connected to your bank’s real website — the certificate issuing authority vouches for them. Unfortunately, certificate authorities sometimes issue bad certificates and the system breaks down. Although it isn’t perfect, the presence of HTTPS is still helpful.<br />When it comes time to log in or send other personal data like a credit card number and payment details, this data should be sent over an encrypted connection with HTTPS. This prevents other people from eavesdropping on your sensitive data.<br />HTTPS also provides additional privacy. For example, Google’s search engine now defaults to HTTPS connections. This means that people can’t see what you’re searching for on Google.com — previously, anyone on the same Wi-Fi network would be able to see your searches. If a connection to Wikipedia is encrypted with HTTPS, people wouldn’t be able to see which article you’re viewing on Wikipedia. They could only see that you’re connected to Wikipedia.<br /><h3>Identifying HTTPS Websites</h3>You can tell you’re connected to a website with an HTTPS connection if the address in your web browser’s address bar starts with https://. You’ll also see a lock icon, which you can click for more information about the website’s security. This looks a bit different in each browser, but all browsers have the https:// and lock icon in common.<br /><br /><img alt="identify-https-website-in-firefox" border="0" height="246" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/identify-https-website-in-firefox.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="identify-https-website-in-firefox" width="400" /><br /><h3>When You Should Care</h3>HTTPS is important whenever you’re logging into something or giving payment details. If you’re about to enter a password or other personal information, check your address bar and ensure that you’re on an HTTPS site. If you’re not, it’s not really safe to enter such sensitive data. Most websites should be doing this properly now, but a badly coded site may still send your sensitive data in unsecured plain-text if it’s set up to connect over HTTP.<br />HTTPS is also valuable because it provides some verification of website identities. If you’re using an unfamiliar network and you connect to your bank’s website, ensure that you see the HTTPS and the correct website address. This helps you ensure that you’re actually connected to the bank’s website, although it’s not a foolproof solution. If you don’t see an HTTPS indicator on the login page, you may be connected to an impostor website on a compromised network.<br /><br /><img alt="identify-https-website-in-internet-explorer" border="0" height="207" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/identify-https-website-in-internet-explorer.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="identify-https-website-in-internet-explorer" width="400" /><br /><h3>Avoiding Phishing Tricks</h3>Some clever phishers have realized that people look for the HTTPS indicator and lock icon and may go out of their way to disguise their websites. You shouldn’t click links in phishing emails — but, if you do, you may find yourself on a cleverly disguised page. Nothing stops a scammer from getting a certificate for their scam server, so there’s nothing to stop scammers from using HTTPS as well — in theory, they’re only prevented from impersonating sites they don’t own. You may see an address like https://bankofamerica.com.3526347346435.com. In this case, you’re using an HTTPS connection, but you’re really connected to a subdomain of a site named 3526347346435.com — not Bank of America.<br />Other scammers may imitate the lock icon, changing their website’s favicon that appears in the address bar to a lock to try to trick you.<br /><hr />Bear in mind that the presence of HTTPS itself isn’t a guarantee a site is legitimate. It confirms you’re using an encrypted connection and provides some peace of mind that you’re connected to the right site, but even that isn’t completely guaranteed.<br /><!-- google_ad_section_end --> </div><br /></div>

Browsers only trust certificates issued by these certificate authorities. If you visited https://example.com, the web server at example.com would present an SSL certificate to you and your browser would check to make sure the website’s SSL certificate was issued for example.com by a trusted certificate authority. If the certificate was issued for another domain or if it wasn’t issued by a trusted certificate authority, you’d see a serious warning in your browser.<br />One major problem is that there are so many certificate authorities, so problems with one certificate authority can affect everyone. For example, you might get an SSL certificate for your domain from VeriSign, but someone could compromise or trick another certificate authority and get a certificate for your domain, too.<br /><img alt="trusted-root-certification-authorities" border="0" height="315" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trusted-root-certification-authorities.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="trusted-root-certification-authorities" width="400" /><br /><h3>Certificate Authorities Haven’t Always Inspired Confidence</h3><div class="relatedside" style="float: right; margin-bottom: 8px; margin-left: 8px; margin-right: 16px; margin-top: 8px; width: 320px;"><span class="relatedtext" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; float: right; font-family: bebas_neueregular; font-size: 16px; font-weight: normal; padding-left: 10px; position: relative; top: -7px; z-index: 1;"> </span></div>Studies have found that some certificate authorities have failed to do even minimal due diligence when issuing certificates. They’ve issued SSL certificates for types of addresses that should never require a certificate, such as “localhost,” which always represents the local computer. In 2011, the EFF <a href="https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2011/04/unqualified-names-ssl-observatory">found</a> over 2000 certificates for “localhost” issued by legitimate, trusted certificate authorities.<br />If trusted certificate authorities have issued so many certificates without verifying that the addresses are even valid in the first place, it’s only natural to wonder what other mistakes they’ve made. Perhaps they’ve also issued unauthorized certificates for other people’s websites to attackers.<br />Extended Validation certificates, or EV certificates, attempt to solve this problem. We’ve covered the problems with SSL certificates and how EV certificates attempt to solve them.<br /><img alt="" height="131" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/image281.png" width="400" /><br /><h3>Certificate Authorities Could Be Compelled to Issue Fake Certificates</h3>Because there are so many certificate authorities, they’re all around the world, and any certificate authority can issue a certificate for any website, governments could compel certificate authorities to issue them an SSL certificate for a site they want to impersonate.<br />This probably happened recently in France, where <a href="http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/further-improving-digital-certificate.html">Google discovered</a> a rogue certificate for google.com had been issued by French certificate authority ANSSI. The authority would have allowed the French government or whoever else had it to impersonate Google’s website, easily performing man-in-the-middle attacks. ANSSI claimed the certificate was only used on a private network to snoop on the network’s own users, not by the French government. Even if this were true, it would be a violation of ANSSI’s own policies when issuing certificates.<br /><img alt="google-anssi-rogue-certificate-france" border="0" height="107" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/google-anssi-rogue-certificate-france.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="google-anssi-rogue-certificate-france" width="400" /><br /><h3>Perfect Forward Secrecy Isn’t Used Everywhere</h3>Many sites don’t use “perfect forward secrecy,” a technique that would make encryption more difficult to crack. Without perfect forward secrecy, an attacker could capture a large amount of encrypted data and decrypt it all with a single secret key. We know that the NSA and other state security agencies around the world are capturing this data. If they discover the encryption key used by a website years later, they can use it to decrypt all the encrypted data that they’ve collected between that website and everyone who’s connected to it.<br />Perfect forward secrecy helps protect against this by generating a unique key for each session. In other words, each session is encrypted with a different secret key, so they can’t all be unlocked with a single key. This prevents someone from decrypting a huge amount of encrypted data all at once. Because very few websites use this security feature, it’s more likely that state security agencies could decrypt all this data in the future.<br /><h3>Man in The Middle Attacks and Unicode Characters</h3>Sadly, man-in-the-middle attacks are still possible with SSL. In theory, it should be safe to connect to a public Wi-Fi network and access your bank’s site. You know that the connection is secure because it’s over HTTPS, and the HTTPS connection also helps you verify that you are actually connected to your bank.<br />In practice, it could be dangerous to connect to your bank’s website on a public Wi-Fi network. There are off-the-shelf solutions that can have a malicious hotspot perform man-in-the-middle attacks on people who connect to it. For example, a Wi-Fi hotspot might connect to the bank on your behalf, sending data back and forth and sitting in the middle. It could sneakily redirect you to an HTTP page and connect to the bank with HTTPS on your behalf.<br />It could also use a “homograph-similar HTTPS address.” This is an address that looks identical to your bank’s on the screen, but  which actually uses special Unicode characters so it’s different. This last and scariest type of attack is known as an internationalized domain name homograph attack. Examine the Unicode character set and you’ll find characters that look basically identical to the 26 characters used in the Latin alphabet. Maybe the o’s in the google.com you’re connected to aren’t actually o’s, but are other characters.<br /><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">We covered this in more detail when we looked at </span><a href="http://www.howtogeek.com/178696/why-using-a-public-wi-fi-network-can-be-dangerous-even-when-accessing-encrypted-websites/" style="line-height: 1.5em;" target="_blank">the dangers of using a public Wi-Fi hotspot</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">.</span><br /><img alt="idn-homograph-attack" border="0" height="306" src="http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/idn-homograph-attack.png" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="idn-homograph-attack" width="400" /><br /><hr />Of course, HTTPS works fine most of the time. It’s unlikely that you’ll encounter such a clever man-in-the-middle attack when you visit a coffee shop and connect to their Wi-Fi. The real point is that HTTPS has some serious problems.
